Spring in Salt LakeSeasonal Transition

Spring is in the air, which means it's time to bring out those golf clubs, bikes, hiking boots and gardening tools and put them to good use. However, there's still skiing to be had up at Snowbird so get up there and make a few more turns before the ski season officially ends.

I bring that up because I must commend our resorts for what they were able to accomplish this winter. Having to work with less than half our normal snowfall, the skiing and riding conditions were quite good and far better than most, if not all, other resorts around the country. To create good conditions in a trying snow year takes hard work, a lot of resources and in-depth knowledge. Without their commitment and diligence to offering a quality product, our tourism numbers could have taken an incredible hit. Rather, our ski and snowboard visitors got one of the best experiences in the country, yet again.

Of course, the height of the ski season falls within the first quarter of the year. Not only did we have surprisingly good ski conditions January through March, Salt Lake hotels experienced even better TRT performance. First quarter TRT sets the stage for the year; if you're going to have a good year, it must start with the first three months. Salt Lake's first quarter TRT came in 11 percent above 2011 and 18 percent above 2010, an incredible sign that things are most definitely moving in the right direction. Obviously, this bodes well for the remainder of 2012.

With the first quarter in the books and what snow we did have quickly melting, it's time to get out and enjoy the warmer weather in what is arguably the most stunning "backyard" anywhere in the country. Soon, we'll also get to enjoy the sounds of countless outdoor concerts, the Farmers' Market, festivals of all sorts, outdoor dining and everything else that makes Salt Lake summers so wonderful.

See you on the trails!

University Guest HouseMember Profile: University Guest House & Conference Center

The University Guest House & Conference Center  opened in 1999 on the University of Utah campus, and they've been growing ever since! So much so, they recently completed an expansion that provides them with 50 new sleeping rooms (bringing the total to 180), an additional 350-seat ballroom, enlarged fitness facilities, larger parking lot, and new front desk and expanded lobby.

The Minnesota DECA delegation is experiencing the hospitality of the Guest House this week, enjoying some of those new guest rooms, as they join the 14,000 students that are in town for the High School Career Development Conference.

With expanded facilities generating more employment opportunities for the hospitality industry, the University Guest House is doing its part in contributing to the economic development of the tourism community!
