Discover Indiana Kale! Kale1

Product code - 5661

Pack size - 12ct

The name Peaper Brothers has been synonymous with the turnip vegetable for more than a century.  Though it is their turnip that has made them famous, they also grow a variety of other vegetables, including kale.  Today's chefs appreciate the stamina of kale, especially on their fresh salad bars.

Kale is considered to be one of the most highly nutritious vegetables, with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. One half cup of chopped boiled kale contains about 18 calories. Pair with fish, poultry and meats to enhance iron absorption. Prepare like spinach: steam, braise or stir-fry. This vegetable loves the company of garlic, pork and ginger. Kale is great in soups with potatoes, beans or barley. Caraway and fennel seeds enhance kale's distinct flavor. Blanch; layer with pasta. Add to salads to accent the flavor of other greens. Use as garnish. Ideal for lining salad bowls and vegetable trays as hardy kale doesn't wilt easily. Enjoy simply as a steamed side dish with butter and favorite fresh herbs and seasonings. Don't miss out on this delicious "super food" - try it today!

Important Quality Issues to Consider when Purchasing:

Lemons - Oxnard is producing the majority of California's fruit followed distantly by the Central Valley. The quality of the California crop is very good with a fairly wide selection of sizes. Prices are steady for now, but it's just a matter of time before the lemon market pushes higher to meet the rising summer demand.

Russets - Idaho's transition from Norkotahs to the smaller Burbanks has pushed the large carton market steadily higher since early March. F.o.b. prices on 70s and larger are strong and have the potential to push higher in June. Shippers confide that the bullish 70-count through 40-count market is more a function of fading supplies than brisk demand. There is talk of internal black spotting in the Burbanks. One speculation is that the potatoes contain high solids and that the packing process (bouncing around) will produce black spotting under the skin. This is a cosmetic issue only and does not tarnish the quality.

Strawberries - Strawberries are being harvested in Santa Maria, Salinas and Watsonville at this time. Quality is fair to good with a steady market. You will still see some white shoulders, green tips, light bruising, mold and water damage showing up in the packs this week. The forecast is for a slight chance of Rain Friday/Saturday. If this storm misses the strawberry growing areas we should be back into great quality strawberries.
