Metro Denver a sponsor, exhibitor at CoreNet Global
The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation (Metro Denver EDC) is sponsor of the upcoming CoreNet Global Summit May 4-7, 2008 in San Diego.
Just a year ago, our region hosted the CoreNet Global Summit in Denver. Next week, the Metro Denver EDC and its economic development partners from the state and region will exhibit in San Diego. Stop by our booth (No. 901) to learn about recent business news and company expansions, including:
- Colorado's landmark economic development package, including single factor corporate tax apportionment, elimination of the fly-away tax on aircraft manufactured in the state, and creation of a $26.5 million bioscience grant program.
- Two major boosts to Metro Denver's burgeoning energy economy with a February 2008 announcement by Houston-based ConocoPhillips to establish a new Global Technology and Corporate Learning Center in Louisville for renewable energy R&D and the March 2008 opening of Vestas Wind System's first North American
wind turbine manufacturing facility in Windsor.
- Fortune Small Business magazine ranked Denver No. 7 on its list of "100 Best Places to Live and Launch" for its mix of business advantages and lifestyle appeal. The report also lauded economic development efforts in the region, "The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation is a truly regional economic development entity with more than 70 partner organizations working together."

NASA funding and business advocacy help make Colorado a space powerhouse
In addition to being the nation's No. 2 aerospace economy for private aerospace employment, Colorado also ranks among the top states for NASA contracts.
In 2007, $354.6 million in NASA funding poured into Colorado, ranking the state in the top-10 overall for space exploration dollars. According to NASA, Colorado "plays an integral role in NASA's mission."
Colorado companies are leading some of the nation's most notable aerospace endeavors, including the Orion spacecraft project. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Jefferson County is the prime contractor for Orion, an $8.2 billion contract to design and build a state-of-the-art Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) that will replace the Space Shuttle as NASA's primary spacecraft for human space exploration.
And through the
Colorado Space Coalition (CSC), industry stakeholders are working together to make Colorado a center for space excellence with industry promotion, legislative activities, and workforce development efforts. Earlier this month, the CSC launched a new Web site,
www.spacecolorado.org. The site has RSS news feeds and a searchable database of over 300 aerospace companies and suppliers in the state.

Broomfield company captures nation's largest Q1 VC award
Despite an overall decline in venture capital awards nationally during the first quarter of 2008, Colorado posted its best quarter in seven years, with $300 million in funding flowing into the state, according to the latest MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association.
Colorado's record quarter can largely be contributed to a $130 million award to Broomfield-based Range Fuels, a leading biofuels company working to commercialize cellulosic ethanol by turning wood waste into motor fuel.
Top awards to Colorado's renewable energy, bioscience, and software companies point to strong industry diversification. Additional Colorado companies and their venture capital awards include: SomaLogic - Boulder, $35 million; Lanx - Broomfield, $25 million; IntelliDx - Boulder, $21.5 million; Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy - Boulder, $12 million; and Tendril Networks - Boulder, $12 million.
