Independence Day in the United States is an annual holiday commemorating the formal adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia. On June 11, 1776, the colonies' Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, formed a committee with the one purpose of drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. Only one year later, July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with food, bonfires, bells and fireworks. Today, July 4th is celebrated with gatherings including family and friends, filled with fun and food. Celebrate with your customers with Dessert Werks cakes.

Important Quality Issues to Consider when Purchasing:

Bananas - During the past few weeks issues in the tropics are causing a banana shortage in North America. Listed below are the top line details regarding this banana industry volume shortage.

Tropical Storm Agatha went through Central America during the Memorial Day weekend. This storm caused wide spread flooding, damage to bridges and roads along with wind damage to many banana farms. In addition, there are currently issues in Ecuador. There is an active volcano in Ecuador. The ash from this volcano is affecting sourcing from many banana farms. In other areas of Ecuador, Sigatoka is creating quality issues with the bananas. The volume losses from these growing areas are creating significant banana industry volume shortfalls for North America.

North American Banana Imports in April 2010 and May 2010 were in the 4.6mm to 4.8 mm boxes per week range. North American Banana Imports for the week of June 21st 2010 are projected to be in the 3.9 mm box range. Chiquita's volumes will be extremely tight for the next several weeks. Without any further issues from the tropics, Chiquita's volume situation is projected to improve by late July or early August.

Green Onions - This market has not changed. Production is steady out of the Mexico region. Pencil sizing continues to have the best availability followed by mediums. There have been less issues of yellowing compared to past weeks. Supplies are good on iceless product if there is a need.

Leaf Lettuce - Shippers are seeing ample supplies of good quality Romaine, green leaf and red leaf from the Salinas Valley and Santa Maria. The market remains very reasonable and will hold near current levels heading into the week of June 28.
