2011 begins with two company expansions, adding 600 jobs to region
The Metro Denver region is off to a good start in 2011 with two California-based companies announcing expansions that will initially add 600 new jobs in the area.
San Francisco-headquartered Trulia,
which operates Trulia.com--a top website for homebuyers, sellers, and renters--announced on January 19 plans to open a 16,000-square-foot office in Centennial to expand its sales force and services.
Trulia's site consultant, Jeff Pappas of Dallas-based Arledge Partners Real Estate Group, added the Metro Denver region as a potential location after attending Metro Denver's Site Selection Conference
in August 2010. "After evaluating 25 different cities across the country, it was clear that Denver, as a technology hub with a highly educated workforce and a strong talent pool, was where we needed to be. We are excited to bring jobs to the region and better serve our growing customer base," said Sami Inkinen, co-founder and COO of Trulia.com. Bridgepoint Education, Inc.,
a San Diego-based provider of postsecondary education services focused on giving greater access to higher education, announced plans on January 20 to open a new location in downtown Denver, bringing 500 new jobs to the region. "Bridgepoint Education will bring needed jobs to Denver and surely boost our state's highly educated workforce," said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. "We welcome the contribution Bridgepoint Education will make to Colorado's economic revival."

John Hickenlooper takes office as Colorado's 42nd Governor
A geologist turned brewer who went on to become Mayor of Denver was sworn in January 11 as Colorado's 42nd governor.
"Our first task, our highest priority, is jobs," Hickenlooper said. "We will help businesses expand and protect the jobs we have, we will attract new jobs, and we will unleash the entrepreneurial spirit that has always defined Colorado through her history."
Later in the week, Gov. Hickenlooper led a four-day trip throughout Colorado to promote a bottom-up economic development plan. He met with business leaders, community members, and local officials in a series of meetings to discuss job creation, government efficiencies, and economic development and recovery.
"We are focusing on the local talent and resources in all 64 Colorado counties," Hickenlooper said. "We want to chart a course for economic revival from the bottom up, county by county. This trip is the start of that process."

NASA/CAMT form partnership to build 200-acre technology park
On December 13, 2010, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., and NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver announced a new Technology Acceleration Program (TAP) that will leverage space technology from NASA to help accelerate economic growth and create new jobs in Colorado.
This public-private partnership will create a regional economic innovation cluster focused on aerospace and energy technologies. Under this model, federal and state governments will work together with industry and academia to strengthen Colorado's economy.
The Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology (CAMT)
is at the core of this exciting initiative, with the Departments of Energy and Commerce joining along with NASA. Through this collaboration, private sector partners are financing the development of a 200-acre Aerospace and Clean Energy Park that will host 60-100 businesses interested in using NASA technologies and expertise to develop new commercial products and services. The goal of this new public-private partnership is to create 10,000 new jobs in Colorado over the next five years.
The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation is working with CAMT to conduct two site searches within the nine-county Metro Denver/Northern Colorado region to identify properties: 1. An existing industrial building or campus that will permit rapid startup of the program, and 2. A Greenfield site for a second campus. CAMT is continuing its process to select a development partner. Once selected, the development partner will assist CAMT with the final selection of the properties indentified in the two site searches.
