Site selectors get a 'Mile High' experience

Nine national site selection consultants attended the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation's (Metro Denver EDC) sixth Site Selection Conference Sept. 23-25, 2009. The conference is coordinated in partnership with the Metro Denver EDC's investors and economic development partners throughout the nine-county Metro Denver and Northern Colorado region.

Over the three-day familiarization tour, the site selectors experienced the region's business assets first-hand with the area's top business and economic development leaders as their guides.

Their agenda included an economic briefing and industry panel discussion, a helicopter flyover of the region, and guided tours of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Space Systems and United Launch Alliance (above photo), DigitalGlobe, the Fitzsimons Life Science District, and the Anschutz Medical Campus. They also dined with area companies at the Denver Art Museum.

In the Conference's final event, the site selectors participated in a panel discussion about site selection trends and Metro Denver's position nationally and internationally for company relocations and expansions.

Saúl Gomez of Ernst & Young said he's amazed at the region's company growth over the past 10 years. "You are now a main player against California when you used to be an afterthought," he commented. "Plus you work well together and it shows."

Bach Composite Industry announces expansion in Northern Colorado

bachBach Composite Industry, a Denmark-based manufacturer of composite materials for wind turbine builders, is the latest renewable energy company to locate a new facility in Colorado.

The company announced in September it will build its first North American manufacturing plant in Fort Lupton. Bach's new facility will utilize a highly sophisticated manufacturing process to produce premium-quality composite products for wind energy customers in Colorado and North America such as Brighton-based Vestas Nacelles America Inc. Bach will employ 100 to 150 workers at full production, which is scheduled to begin in early 2010.

Bach CEO Geert Skovsgaard touted Colorado's business-friendly environment, skilled workforce, and dedication to economic development and business assistance as key factors in his decision.

"While its reputation as a leading state for renewable energy and the presence of such an important customer made Colorado an obvious choice, it was not our only option," Skovsgaard said. "Our decision to locate in Fort Lupton is a direct result of the extraordinary attention and assistance we received from the Governor's economic development team, which made it possible to acquire, entitle, renovate, and occupy a vacant industrial building more quickly than I ever could have hoped."

Colorado No. 4 on Forbes 'Best States for Business' list

beststates_logoColorado moved up two notches from No. 6 to No. 4 in Forbes magazine's notable 2009 Best States for Business list. The report measures six vital categories for businesses: costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life.

In those categories, Colorado ranked No. 1 for labor, No. 2 for growth prospects, and No. 5 for economic climate.

"Colorado is honored to be recognized by Forbes.com as the fourth best state to do business," Gov. Ritter said. "We have one of the nation's most highly skilled workforces and tremendous job growth opportunities. Combine that with the low cost of doing business and our excellent quality of life, and there's no question Colorado will emerge from this downturn quicker, stronger and healthier."

In July, CNBC ranked Colorado No. 3 on its prestigious annual list of America's Top States for Business, specifically citing the state's New Energy Economy. Also in July, MSNBC named Colorado as one of the five states most likely to recover first from the downtown.

FasTracks releases $2.3 billion RFP

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) has released its largest RFP for FasTracks, the $6.9 billion project to build out the region's entire mass transit system by 2017. The project award is valued at $2.3 billion and will cover one-third of its proposed rail lines and budget. This segment alone will provide a huge economic development boost to the area, the biggest since the $5 billion effort to build Denver International Airport, as wages for design, construction, and all other work flow into the economy.
