Important Quality Issues to Consider when Purchasing:

Berries -

Raspberries: Supplies are better with a weaker market. Quality is good.

Blackberries: Good supplies and moderate demand is causing a steady market. Quality is being reported as good.

Iceberg Lettuce  - The persistent wet, cold and windy conditions of April continue into May. Current lettuce supplies are sporadic because of planting gaps, below-normal temperatures, and wet and windy conditions. The supply stream is inconsistent from one shipper to the next.  Salinas Valley lettuce shippers continue to struggle with yields as low as 700 cartons per acre compared to the anticipated 900 to 1,000. During extended periods of sub-par yields, processors churn through extra lettuce acreage to achieve their necessary raw product requirements. It perpetuates the problem of light yields and delays the eventual return to normal production levels and quality conditions. Today's quality has improved noticeably over the past two weeks but still has a host of issues, including bottom rot, mildew, occasional red ribs, small head size and light weights. The lettuce market is somewhat brittle. Foodservice and retail prices could jump considerably in a short period of time if processors find the need to buy extra lettuce acreage on the open market.

Watermelon - Better supplies on seedless product withseeded watermelon now also in good supplies.Prices are steady. The mini seedless are inbetter supply and quality is good, the marketremains flat.
